Star Wreck: In The Pirkinning - NOT!
Update 2005-09-09: read the real review.
This was supposed to be an enthusiastic review of the new indie movie Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning. Instead, this is a rant by an angry fan.
Today, on the 20th of August in the year 2005, is the movie's release. Even
now, the the main page contains this date
in big, red type, along with the words, Once the movie is finished you can
download it for free from these pages!
Not once did it occur to me that
the crew did not mean what they wrote. They still call this the release date,
but what they mean by a release is apparently a screening for cast and crew.
Never mind that the rest of the world defines release as - a release, the point
when the movie is available to the general public. That is still a few weeks
off (if you order the DVD, which one even cannot do at this time, despite of a
year-long campaign for people to "preorder" it) or a few months off (for the
official general download).
I don't mind the wait itself that much - this movie has been "ready Real Soon Now" since seven years - the release date was always slipping. What pisses me off is how the crew didn't go about it honestly in this case. They shouted about a release on August 20, 2005, telling us to preorder the DVD (when the preorder link lead to a mailing list subscription page) and that the movie would be available for download as soon as it is ready. I would not have minded, had they said at the beginning of this month, "sorry, guys, we need one more month", but they didn't.
A cast & crew (+ perhaps some VIPs) screening is not a release!
Sure, it is an amateur project, but that's not an excuse. Because my father has directed numerous amateur theatre groups, I've seen numerous amateur theatre productions, and I have seen what amateurs can do; and I have experienced it myself as a Debian developer.
Baah!
I have no idea if the movie is good or bad, for I have not seen it. It's supposedly a dark comedy inspired by Star Trek and Babylon 5, featuring the by now familiar cast of Captain Pirk, Mr Info and others. There's even a nationally well known professional actor in a minor role! The trailer and the teasers previously released are appetizing.
I'll get back to you when the movie has been released for real.
